Total boys = 1100 and girls = 900 Boys who passed = $$frac{50}{100} imes1100=550$$ => Boys who failed = $$1100-550=550$$ Girls who passed = $$frac{40}{100} imes900=360$$ => Girls who failed = $$900-360=540$$
Thus, percentage of candidates who failed = $$frac{(550+540)}{(1100+900)} imes100$$ = $$frac{1090}{20}=54.5\%$$ => Ans - (D)
