Let the ship started from point A and sailed 12 km south to reach B, and then turned east and finally reached C after travelling 5 km. Thus, $$(AC)^2=(AB)^2+(BC)^2$$ => $$(AC)^2=(12)^2+(5)^2$$
=> $$(AC)^2=144+25=169$$ => $$AC=sqrt{169}=13$$ km => Ans - (D)
