Let average runs of the batsman in the first 15 matches = $$x$$ => Total runs scored in 15 matches = $$15x$$ Runs scored in 16th match = 81 => New average = $$frac{15x+81}{16}=x+3$$ => $$15x+81=16x+48$$ => $$16x-15x=81-48$$ => $$x=33$$
Average after the 16th match = $$33+3$$ = $$36$$. Therefore, option D is the right answer.
