Let the number of qualified candidates from state P in 2008 be male = 11x and female = 7x Since, no. of qualified female candidates = 126 (given) => 7x = 126 => x = 18 Therefore, total qualified candidates from state P in 2008 = 11x + 7x = 18x =18*18 = 324 Since, 60% candidates qualified from state P in 2008 No. of appeared candidates = (324*100)/60 = 540
