*2016 commemorates 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare *Shakespeare was born on 23rd April, 1564 and he died on 23rd April, 1616 *Has was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire just 5 miles from London *His actual date of birth remains unknown, but is traditionally observed on 23 April, which is also observed as Saint George's Day *He was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. *Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets. One play called 'Cardenio' has no written record today. Only 36 plays can be read today. *'The Tempest' was his last play *He is often regarded as 'England's National Poet', and the 'Bard of Avon' *Between 1585 & 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. *His early plays were primarily comedies and histories, and these are regarded as some of the best work ever produced in these genres. *He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. *After 1594, Shakespeare's plays were performed only by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, a company owened by a group of players, including Shakespeare.
